Overview

The Emperor's Palace was built in the 4th century as a combination of a luxurious villa and a Roman military camp, divided into two parts with two main streets:

The southern part of the palace was intended for the emperor's private quarters and appropriate governmental and religious ceremonies. The northern part of the palace was destined for the imperial guard: military, servants, depot, etc.

In the 7th century, refugees from the city of Salona inhabited abandoned parts of the palace and transformed the palace into a city, adapting parts of the palace to their own needs. The tour will take you through the 1700-year-old Diocletian's Palace, where people have continued to live for the last 13 centuries.

You will discover why the emperor retired here, how he built the palace, how long he lived there, and where his tomb is.
