Tlatelolco Free Walking Tour: Mexico's History in One Place
Overview
As a resident of Tlatelolco, I'll show you my neighborhood in six stops:
-Mario Pani's housing complex (1964) — a "city within the city", built as a utopia.
-The Aztec market that Cortés compared to Salamanca: 60,000 people traded here every day, using cacao as currency.
-The fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521 and the first institution of higher learning in the Americas, where the Florentine Codex was created.
-October 2, 1968: the student massacre that still shapes Mexico today — and the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which made Latin America free of nuclear weapons.
-The 1985 earthquake, the collapse of the Nuevo León building and the birth of the neighborhood movement.
-To finish: the colonial Tecpan, a Siqueiros mural and the Jardín de Santiago.
Right next to the plaza, you'll also find the M68 Museum and the archaeological zone, both with a small entrance fee, perfect to visit after the tour.

Our Guides
On arrival
The meeting point is the esplanade right at the exit of Tlatelolco metro station (Line 3, green line).
By metro: take Line 3 to Tlatelolco station. Use the exit to the esplanade — I'll be waiting for you there. From there we'll start the tour together, walking toward the Plaza de las Tres Culturas.
By Uber/taxi: enter "Metro Tlatelolco" as your destination and get dropped off at the esplanade.
Things to note
• This is a free walking tour: joining is free, and at the end you can give a voluntary tip — based on how much you enjoyed the tour.
• The tour takes place entirely outdoors. Please bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and water; during the rainy season (June–October) an umbrella is recommended for afternoon tours.
• The route is flat and easy to walk, also suitable for children. We walk about 1.5 km total at a relaxed pace.
• The tour runs in (almost) any weather.
• The M68 Museum and the archaeological zone can be visited after the tour at your own expense.
• Please arrive 10 minutes before the start
