Free Taco Tour: Authentic Tacos in the Historic District
Overview
We’ll walk through the historic heart of the city, visiting traditional taquerías where some of the country’s most iconic tacos are prepared. You’ll sample different regional styles: Michoacán-style carnitas, Yucatecan-style cochinita pibil, Toluca chorizo, and the classic taco al pastor—one of the capital’s greatest street food icons.
At each stop, you’ll learn about the taco’s origins, its historical evolution, and how different regions of the country have contributed flavors, techniques, and traditions that now coexist in a single city. More than just a food tour, it’s a cultural experience in the heart of the Historic Center, where you’ll understand why the taco is an essential part of everyday Mexican life.
It’s a relaxed and authentic tour to discover the city through its cuisine. Food and drinks are not included; bring at least 300 Mexican pesos per person for tacos and beverages. There is no vegan option; all types of meat are served.

Our Guides
On arrival
We’ll meet at the entrance to the San Juan Handicraft Market, located at Ayuntamiento 22-28, Colonia Centro, in Mexico City’s Historic Center. It’s a very busy area, so we recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early. Your guide will be waiting with a black backpack and sunglasses. If you have trouble locating the exact spot, you can search for “San Juan Handicraft Market” directly on Google Maps.
Things to note
Food and drinks are not included in the tour; we recommend bringing at least $300 MXN per person to try the tacos at each stop. The taquerías only accept cash, so be sure to bring enough cash before the tour begins. There is no vegan option available: all types of meat are consumed during the tour. The tour is not suitable for people with limited mobility or for bringing pets. Come hungry, wear comfortable walking clothes, and be eager to discover Mexico City through its flavors.
