Overview

Discover Antigua Guatemala’s hidden architectural gems on this fascinating guided tour.

The tour begins in the Central Square, the heart of the former colonial capital. A professional guide explains the development of Spanish colonial power in Central America, convent life, and the Renaissance-style layout adapted to the volcanic terrain.

Proceed to the ruins of the Old Cathedral of San José. Explore its interior and descend into the underground crypts, a mystical space that reveals colonial religious power.

Continue with a tour of the Convent of Santa Clara, which represents the cloistered life of women dedicated to prayer and poverty. Proceed to the Church of San Francisco and the tomb of Saint Brother Pedro de Betancur. Next, an external tour of the former Capuchin Convent. Admire the façade of La Merced Church, a magnificent example of Guatemalan ultra-Baroque architecture.

The tour concludes at the iconic Arch of Santa Catalina, an elevated walkway that once linked the convent of cloistered nuns. It ends with a visit to the Jade Maya factory and museum.

A walking tour combining historical and architectural information, Catholic traditions and Mayan-colonial culture.
