Overview

The Complete Free Amsterdam walking tour is led by a guide qualified to graduate level and with more than 2 years of guiding experience in Amsterdam.

We explain the story of a city that has been called the birthplace of liberalism, touching on the Dutch Golden Age, The Dutch East India Company, prostitution, marijuana, protest movements, riots, the history of the Amsterdam Jewish Community and a host of other subjects to explain how Amsterdam has become famed as one of the most tolerant cities in the world.

This is a tip based walking tour, with no fixed charge - tips are normally around €10 per person, but this is just a suggestion - all guests are welcome and donations of any size are very welcome and much appreciated. Our guide receives no salary and all the proceeds of the tour go towards the costs of running our business and feeding and clothing them.

We have looked into using robot guides, but they lack his good looks and charm.

Join the Complete Free Amsterdam Walking Tour for an awesome introduction to the Dutch capital!

This activity includes:

  • Dam Square
  • Red Light District
  • Nieuwemarkt
  • Jewish Quarter
  • Canal Belt
  • Classic Dutch Town House
  • Famous Dancing Houses

My daughters and I really enjoyed the walking tour. A great way to learn about the backgound of Amsterdam and get an idea of where things are. An informative start to our weekend!

What better way to learn about the history of a country than to have a historian be the guide? Learned a lot about Amsterdam and our guide did a great job! Thank you

Despite the fact that there were only two of us, our guide didn’t cancel the tour and we had a great private tour, with a lot of tips for the rest of the days! Highly recommended!

Meeting point

Amazing Oriental Supermarket Entrance

On arrival

You can find the tour guide, holding a sign saying "InContext Tours", in front of the Amazing Oriental Supermarket on the Nieuwmarkt. It is very close to the Metro station.

On certain days there is a market on the square - don't worry, we are still there! Try to find your way around it and we will be at the Amazing Oriental Supermarket. If you cannot find your guide you are encouraged to call him - a number is included in your booking information.

If you have a group larger than five there is a fee per person for this tour. Please do not try to avoid this by making multiple bookings - if it is apparent that you are a single group with multiple bookings, you will not be allowed to take the tour and will be refused service on the day.

Things to note

This is a tips based walking tour, the normal tip is about 10 euros per person. This is just a suggestion and any donation you could give is very gratefully received - the guide is completely unpaid and relies on tips for income and in order to pay business expenses like the cost of this reservation.

Please note that we have a cancellation policy, which you can find detailed below.

InContext Tours would like to apologize for this policy - sadly it has become necessary owing to very large numbers of no-shows to our tours.

Weather in Amsterdam is changeable - please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately! An umbrella never hurts.

Please note that with our apologies, owing to our entry to the Red Light district and the more advanced subject matter of the tour, it is not suitable for children. Guests to the city with children under the age of 18 are strongly advised not to take the tour.

Cancellation policy

This tour has a 1 day cancellation policy. Failure to cancel within this time will result in a cancellation charge of €2 fee per person.
