Zanzibar Free Walking Tours: Explore Exotic Paradise for an Unforgettable Vacati

People often go to Zanzibar for a beach holiday. But there are also some really interesting places that will allow you to reconsider your attitude to this island, learn many new historical facts, feel the flavor of Africa and, of course, take many interesting photos. In particular, the free walking tour in Zanzibar will help you do this.

Best Tourist Places in Zanzibar

Traveling to such an exotic and distant country requires appropriate preparation. The question of what to see when you visit Zanzibar is relevant, so below, we have provided five of the city's best attractions.

Stone town

Stone Town is a historical part of Zanzibar City, which fell into disrepair as a result of the upheavals of the 20th century. However, there is something to see here, because the sights in Stone Town, which existed already in the 8th century, are found literally at every step.

Anglican church

The Anglican Church of Christ is the first Catholic cathedral in East Africa and one of the main attractions of Zanzibar. The appearance of this temple, built in 1887, mixed features of late Victorian Gothic and traditional Arabic style, and at first glance it is difficult to understand whether you are looking at a Christian church or a Muslim mosque.

Palace museum in Stone Town

The Beit es-Sahel Palace Museum is located in a three-story building with crenelated walls, built in the late 19th century. Inside you will see exhibits telling about the life and everyday life of the rulers of Zanzibar. For most tourists, the guides' story about the Zanzibar princess Said Salma, who ran away with a German merchant to Europe and wrote a book there, which became the first published autobiography of an Arab woman, seems especially fascinating.

Freddie Mercury house museum

This three-story house in the center of Stone Town is outwardly no different from the neighboring buildings. You might not even pay attention to it if it weren't for the sign at the entrance stating that it was in this house that Farrukh Bulsara, known to the whole world as Freddie Mercury, was born and lived the first eight years of his life. Today, this building houses a museum and a small hotel "Tembo", which is decorated in such a way as to remind fans of the legendary vocalist of the rock group "Queen" of their idol. The entrance fee is 10 dollars.

Old fort

Near the Stone Town embankment, on a cape jutting out into the sea, stands the Old Fort – an Arab fortress built in the late 17th – early 18th centuries and today the oldest structure in Zanzibar. Despite its venerable age, the fort is well preserved: the towers, massive fortress walls and ruins of the Portuguese chapel inside have survived.
