Overview

Sofia is not just an ancient Byzantine city, an Ottoman capital, or an example of Soviet architecture. Hidden among these different layers of its history lies another Sofia, one that is more elegant and often overlooked: the Sofia of the Belle Époque, the last great era of European elegance before the upheavals of the 20th century.

During this approximately 2.5-hour walking tour, we’ll discover this other side of Sofia through its facades, decorative arts, floral motifs, eclectic architecture, and the elegant residences of the city’s bourgeoisie and new elite.

We’ll walk along Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard and through the Oborishte neighborhood, with its villas and diplomatic district, marked by the presence of embassies and foreign missions.

We’ll also discuss the role of French and Italian architects, artists, artisans, diplomats, and intellectuals in the modernization of the young Bulgarian capital.

The goal is not merely to see monuments, but to understand how Sofia opened itself up to Europe and forged its new identity.

On arrival

Meeting place: Kvadrat 500 – National Gallery of Bulgaria, 19 “February 19” Street, Sofia.
The meeting point is in front of the main entrance to Kvadrat 500, in downtown Sofia, just a few minutes’ walk from Sofia University and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
I’ll be wearing a green wide-brimmed hat so you can easily recognize me.
Please arrive about 10 minutes before the tour begins.

Things to note

The tour lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes and takes place entirely on foot and outdoors. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.

No admission ticket is required: the tour consists solely of outdoor visits and explanations of the buildings, monuments, and neighborhoods along the route.

Please arrive about 10 minutes before the tour starts.

At the end of the tour, if you still have a little time, I’d be happy to suggest grabbing a coffee at a nearby café and continuing our conversation in a casual setting.
