Overview
The trip starts at 10 a.m. with a pick-up from your hotel or address in Sofia by a private car. The travel time to the monastery is about 2 hours along a scenic road. The Rila Monastery was established in the 10th century by the Bulgarian Saint John of Rila – the miracle maker. It is the biggest Bulgarian monastery and one of the most beautiful. The current monastery complex was built in the 19th century. Access to the yard and the church is free.
Upon arrival, you will first take a guided tour of approximately 40 minutes, followed by 2.5 hours of free time to take photos, visit the souvenir shops, and explore the museum (if you are interested). During your free time, you can also take a break for lunch. You may bring your food from Sofia (a good idea in summer if you want to spend more time outdoors), or ask the guide to take you to one of the nearby restaurants.
At 3 p.m., you will depart and are expected to arrive back in Sofia around 5 p.m.
