Chinatown Free Walking Tour: Secrets of the Back Alleys
Overview
Each mural reveals a different aspect of Chinatown’s past—a typical family home in a shophouse, a bustling market where livestock were once sold, and the story of a clog maker and a kitchenware shop that still exist and operate today. You will also discover scenes depicting past trades, including a puppet and mask seller, a mamak shopkeeper, and many more.
Along the way, you will also discover that the street names—both formal and informal—each carry fascinating stories, reflecting the trades, communities, and colourful characters that once shaped the neighbourhood.
A Singapore tour isn’t complete without a visit to our hawker centres—where a vibrant spread of local dishes and flavours comes alive—proudly inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. There’s a reason the world took notice.
