Overview
Did you know that Santiago was built on an ancient Inca settlement? Or that in a downtown church there is an image of Christ whose crown was left on his neck after an earthquake more than 350 years ago?
In "Santiago: stories that are still alive" we will tour the historic center of the city to discover stories, characters and places that connect the past with the present.
We will visit emblematic sites such as Plaza de Armas, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Casa Colorada, the Municipal Theater and Cerro Santa Lucia. During the tour we will talk about the pre-Hispanic world, the arrival of the Spaniards, the colony, independence and different key moments in the history of Chile.
We will also explore the presence of the native peoples, especially the Mapuche culture, and how their influence is still alive in the language, the names of communes and the cultural identity of Santiago.
More than memorizing dates, this tour seeks to understand how history is still present in everyday life and to discover the stories that still live in the city.
