We will explore the long history of Rome’s famous Jewish ghetto, tracing a history spanning over three centuries, beginning in 1555 with the papal bull that confined some 4,000 Jews to an area of just three hectares—a confinement that would end in 1870 with the breach at Porta Pia— and then move on to the deeply tragic period that began in 1938 with the racial laws, leading up to the “Black Night” of October 16, 1943, when over 1,000 people were rounded up—only 15 of whom would ever return— As we walk along Via della Reginella—one of the streets hardest hit by the roundup—we’ll find numerous stumbling stones commemorating all the people who were deported and never returned to Rome. It will be an emotional and, at the same time, sad tour, but we’ll discover a small corner of Rome with an incredible history that we’ll strive to understand so that such events are never repeated.
