Overview

St. Peter's Basilica, a symbol of Catholicism, has late antique origins on the tomb of St. Peter. Under the dome by Bernini and Michelangelo, commissioned by eminent popes between the 15th and 16th centuries-Bramante, Raphael, Maderno, and Bernini expanded its size and décò.

The Passetto del Borgo, a fortified corridor between Castel Sant'Angelo and Porta San Pietro, offered refuge to fleeing popes and was a strategic route in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, a silent witness to the history of the Eternal City.
