This walking tour explores the stories hidden behind some of Manhattan's most iconic streets. Together we'll discover how immigration, public health, architecture, finance, real estate and public spaces shaped the modern city.
We'll visit Madison Square Park, learn why Park Avenue wasn't always called Park Avenue, uncover the history of the original Madison Square Garden, discover how an old church became an exclusive cocktail bar, walk around Manhattan's only private park, and finish in front of the iconic Flatiron Building.
Along the way we'll discuss the rise of skyscrapers, the struggle between public and private space, the legacy of Simon Baruch, New York's immigrant communities and the people who helped build the city.

Meet me at Madison Square Park, next to the William H. Seward Statue, located at the corner of Madison Avenue & East 23rd Street.
I'll be waiting with a purple umbrella so you'll be able to spot me easily.
Please arrive 5–10 minutes before the tour starts so we can begin on time.
