Overview

Most visitors come to this neighborhood to photograph the Flatiron Building or stroll through Union Square.

Few realize they are walking through one of the places that transformed New York forever.

This walking tour explores the stories hidden behind some of Manhattan's most iconic streets. Together we'll discover how immigration, public health, architecture, finance, real estate and public spaces shaped the modern city.

We'll visit Madison Square Park, learn why Park Avenue wasn't always called Park Avenue, uncover the history of the original Madison Square Garden, discover how an old church became an exclusive cocktail bar, walk around Manhattan's only private park, and finish in front of the iconic Flatiron Building.

Along the way we'll discuss the rise of skyscrapers, the struggle between public and private space, the legacy of Simon Baruch, New York's immigrant communities and the people who helped build the city.

This isn't just an architecture tour.

It isn't just a history tour.

It's a different way of understanding New York.

Perfect for travelers who want to go beyond the typical tourist attractions and discover the city through history, urbanism and culture.
