Overview

The New Orleans Garden District has always been known for its beautiful palatial homes, large southern live oak trees, and Lafayette Cemetery #1 (The Cemetery is closed to the public until further notice ,but will be discussed at a gate where the group can see into it). On this tour, we will discuss the history and stories of Lafayette Cemetery #1, the beautiful Greek Revival and Italianate homes, and the history of the Americanization of New Orleans.

The tour will explore in detail what Americanization meant for New Orleans and how the emergence of this neighborhood also brought an immigrant population to New Orleans that has given the city much of its unique character. Of course, we will also dive into a detailed discussion of the politics and the environmental necessity of the architecture of the neighborhood.

Meeting point

2801 Prytania St

On arrival

I will be standing on the corner of Washington Ave and Prytania St in front of 2801 Prytania, 10 minutes before the start of the tour. I will be wearing a dark gray backpack, and I'll be wearing a cap and sunglasses. I will have my phone with me at all times. Please feel free to text me if you are running late or need help finding me. The tour typically starts on time, but if you are a few minutes late, the group remains near the starting corner for at least the first 10 minutes.

Things to note

If you need anything before the tour begins, I recommend Chicory House Coffee at 2727 Prytania St or Le Petit Bleu at 1427 Washington Ave. They have coffee, pastries, a restroom, and water. I also recommend always being prepared for rain. In New Orleans, rain showers can form very quickly and without much notice.
