Tales of Madrid: Kings, Curses & the City's Arab Origins Free Tour
Overview
I created this walk to share the Madrid locals actually talk about: how a 9th-century Muslim fortress named Mayrit became Spain's capital, why true Madrileños proudly call themselves "cats" (gatos), and what happened during the Inquisition trials of Plaza Mayor.
Along our 2-hour walk through the historic center, we’ll cover:
The Bear & Strawberry Tree: The medieval land dispute that birthed Madrid's emblem.
Plaza Mayor: High-society balcony rivalries and the fires that started curse rumors.
La Morería & Arab Wall: The Islamic founding and the daring 1085 wall-climb.
Royal Palace & Almudena: Court gossip, the 1734 Christmas Eve fire, and 3,400 rooms.
Plaza de Oriente: How Galileo balanced a 9-ton bronze horse on two legs.
We’ll keep a relaxed pace with photo stops. Afterward, I’ll share my personal shortlist of favorite spots for authentic tapas and churros away from the crowds. Join me!

On arrival
We will meet right in Puerta del Sol (28013 Madrid), right at the base of the famous Bear and Strawberry Tree statue (El Oso y el Madroño) on the east curve of the square.
How to spot your guide: Look for me standing right at the base of the Bear statue holding a bright green umbrella, you won't be able to miss me!
Things to note
Footwear: We will be walking on historic cobblestones throughout the center, so comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended!
Weather & Hydration: Madrid weather can change quickly, bring a bottle of water, and sunscreen or a jacket depending on the season.
Arrival: Please try to arrive 10 minutes before the start time so we can check everyone in and begin on schedule.
