The Secret History & Legends of Kyoto Free Tour
Overview
We'll pass the gate where the dead were once brought out of the city. We'll stand in front of a candy shop that has been selling sweets to a ghost for four hundred years. We'll walk streets where geisha still disappear around corners at dusk, and climb toward a temple built not by imperial decree but by a vision on a mountainside.
No rush. No checklist. Just Kyoto — told the way it deserves to be told.
I'm Xavi, a Spanish writer and historian with a background in art history and symbolism. I've spent years studying Japan's religion, mythology, and sacred architecture. I share what I know, you ask what you want to know, and we move at the pace of the conversation.
Come curious. Leave with stories.

Our Guides
On arrival
I will be at Yasaka Shrine — West Gate (the gate that opens to the long Gion street with many shops), with a white umbrella. I am easily recognizable with my beard. I will also be holding the FreeTour logo on my mobile.
Things to note
-This tour doesn't require you to enter any temples: legends and history are the main focus. However, if you want, you can enter the different temples. Keep in mind, though, that the tickets are not included in the tour.
-If you want me to guide you around the temples, I'll do it very gladly, but you will have to cover the cost of my ticket. If you prefer to visit the temple by yourself, I'll explain it to you before you enter and I'll wait outside.
-This is a tip-based tour. At the end, you can contribute how much you want, depending how worthy you think the experience was for you. If you want to contribute by cash, you'll have to do it with japanese money (yen). I also accept payments online, on the spot, via QR (Wise, Paypal, etc).
How can the tour be free?
Our concept is simple — there is no set price. Instead, you tip your guide at the end of the tour whatever amount feels right to you. Typically, guests give between $10 to €50, depending on their satisfaction and budget.
Most guides accept cash or card payments, or you can do it via our app.
Cancellation policy
You are free to cancel a booking anytime. We kindly remind you to cancel bookings you cannot arrive for. Being reported as absent decreases your customer level points and the benefits you can enjoy.
