Tune Into Kyoto: Feminism in the Geisha District, Faith in Emptiness
Overview
This tour offers fluent English, detailed explanations, personal conversation, and local recommendations for cafés, restaurants, and fashion spots nearby.
We will walk through Pontocho Alley, Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Chionin Temple.
The first half focuses on geisha culture. Many people imagine white makeup, elegant manners, dance, music, mystery, and beauty. But behind this image, there is discipline, pressure, sacrifice, and the voices of real women.
So we will look at geisha culture not only as tradition, but also through modern feminism and Me Too. We will start from its history, remove the layers of mystery, and see both the beautiful mask and the human struggle behind it.
The second half focuses on Shintoism and Buddhism. Shrines and temples may look sacred, solemn, and distant, but Japanese religion is also full of funny, strange, and surprisingly human stories.
The relationship between Shintoism and Buddhism is tangled and inseparable, so we will take it apart piece by piece, almost like Lego.
This is a tour about learning how to read Kyoto through streets, women, gods, temples, stories, and quiet contradictions.
This activity includes:
- Pontocho Alley
- Tatsumi-jinja Shrine (Tatsumi Dai-myojin)
- Maruyama Park
- Yasaka-jinja Shrine
- Chion-in

Things to note
This is not a big-group tour. I usually welcome only a small group(Limited to 6 Guests) at a time, so the experience feels personal and relaxed.
Also, as our walk through Kyoto’s time-worn streets comes to a close, I will share a few ideas to help you continue exploring this area on your own. From hidden corners worth wandering to nearby restaurants where you can slow down and taste the city, you’ll leave with routes and tips that extend the journey beyond the tour.
May your time in Kyoto remain filled with joy and discovery!
