Overview
Hello, and welcome to my tour of Dublin. My name is Gerard Counihan.
I have divided Dublin into two areas - North of the Liffey and South of the Liffey. The Liffey is 120 kilometres long and attracted the Vikings to Dublin, who set up a colony here in the year 841. We visit their former settlements.
Next came the Anglo-Normans, led by Strongbow in 1170, and then the English a year later. We walk and visit their principal contributions to Dublin: Dublin Castle, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, Trinity College, medieval sites ...
By the year 1700, the English were largely in control of Ireland, with Dublin the centre of gravity. Dublin was the second city of the British Empire and was very attractive to the British and the European elite. We walk and see where they lived, as well as where the non-elite lived!
The route includes: Temple Bar; The 1916 Rebellion and its consequences; the GPO on O Connell Street; Government Buildings and the beautiful Merrion Square and Stephen's Green; past Trinity College; The Church Cafe Bar on Mary Street ( a former church!); City Hall; Dublin Castle; St. Patrick's Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral ...
