Reaching the Humantay Lagoon, located in the region of Cusco, Peru, involves a trip that combines road and trekking. Here is a step-by-step guide so you can visit it:
1. Arrival in Cusco
- First, you need to get to the city of Cusco. You can get there by plane or by bus from other cities in Peru.
2. Preparations
- Make sure you are acclimatized to the altitude, as Cusco is more than 3,400 meters above sea level.
- Bring adequate clothing for the climate, water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat.
3. Transportation to Mollepata
- From Cusco, we will take you to the town of Mollepata. The trip takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.
4. Mollepata to Soraypampa
- Once in Mollepata, we will continue to Soraypampa, which is the starting point for the hike to the Humantay Lagoon. This trek takes about 1 hour.
5. Hike to the Humantay Lagoon
- From Soraypampa, you will begin the hike to the Humantay Lagoon. The distance is approximately 2.5 km and takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your physical condition. The trail is a bit steep, but the views are spectacular.
6. Enjoying the Humantay Lagoon
- Once you arrive, you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the lagoon and the surrounding mountains. Take your time to take pictures and appreciate the place.

Things to consider before you go
Physical condition: The hike to the lagoon can be strenuous due to the altitude (approximately 4,200 meters above sea level). If you're not used to high altitudes, consider acclimatizing for a few days in Cusco before your trip.
Weather: The temperature can vary quite a bit during the day. It's advisable to check the weather forecast and plan your visit in that window. The best time to go is from May to October, during the dry season.
Hours: Most tours start early, around 4:00 a.m. to take advantage of the best hours of the day. Altitude: Take precautions against altitude sickness. Hydrate well and consider bringing altitude sickness pills if you're prone to it.
