Overview
Visit the Citadel of Salah El Din and the Mosque of Mohamed Ali, whose construction began in 1830 and was completed in 1857. You will also see the Gawhara Palace of Mohamed Ali. Then continue to Coptic Cairo, where you will visit the Hanging Church, dating back to the 3rd century AD and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is called the "Hanging Church" because it was built above the gatehouse of the ancient Roman Fortress of Babylon and features beautiful icons depicting religious scenes. Next, visit the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, dating back to the 7th or 8th century, which is believed to stand on the spot where the Holy Family rested at the end of their journey. This whole area is a world-famous destination for pilgrims. Continue to the Church of St. George the Martyr, built into the walls of the Fortress of Babylon, one of Cairo's oldest surviving structures. End the tour with a visit to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, famous for its Geniza (storeroom), where a remarkable collection of Hebrew secular and sacred manuscripts was discovered in the 19th century. If time permits, you may also visit the Mosque of Amr Ibn El-Aas, the oldest mosque in Egypt. After that, transfer.
