Our Guides
On arrival
Welcome to your Siwa Oasis adventure! We understand that arriving in a new place, especially one as unique and remote as Siwa, can feel a bit disorienting. Rest assured, our team is committed to making your arrival as smooth and stress-free as possible.
How to Find Your Activity on Arrival:
Given the unique nature of Siwa Oasis, most tours, especially those originating from Cairo or other major cities, include transportation as part of the package. This is highly recommended due to the long distance and the specific permit requirements for some desert activities.
Here's how you can typically expect to find your activity:
1. For Tours Including Transportation from Cairo/Other Cities (Most Common):
Pre-arranged Pick-up: If your tour package includes pick-up from Cairo (or another city like Alexandria or Marsa Matrouh), our representative or your designated driver will meet you directly at your specified pick-up location (e.g., your hotel lobby, Cairo International Airport, or a designated bus station). You will have received specific instructions, including the pick-up time, driver's name, and contact number, prior to your departure.
Journey to Siwa: The drive to Siwa is significant, typically 8-12 hours from Cairo. Your driver will ensure comfortable stops for rest, refreshments, and bathroom breaks along the way.
Arrival in Siwa & Hotel Check-in: Upon reaching Siwa Oasis, your driver will take you directly to your pre-booked accommodation (eco-lodge or hotel). Our local representative or the hotel staff will be expecting you and assist with your check-in.
First Activity Briefing: Shortly after settling in, your tour guide will either meet you at the hotel or contact you to provide a detailed briefing for your tour, outlining the schedule for the rest of Day 1 and the following days. This is your opportunity to ask any last-minute questions.
2. For Customers Arranging Their Own Transport to Siwa:
If you have arranged your own transportation to Siwa (e.g., by public bus from Cairo/Marsa Matrouh, or a private car independently booked):
Designated Meeting Point at Your Accommodation: Our primary meeting point for activities within Siwa will be the reception area of your pre-booked Siwa accommodation. Please inform us of your hotel/lodge details when booking so we can coordinate effectively.
Arrival by Public Bus:
From Cairo: Buses typically arrive at the main bus station in Siwa town. From there, it's a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride to most accommodations. You can easily find these outside the bus station.
From Marsa Matrouh: Similar to Cairo, buses or microbuses arrive at the Siwa bus station.
Arrival by Private Car (Self-Drive/Independent Driver): Your driver will take you directly to your accommodation.
Contact Us Upon Arrival: Please inform us via phone or messaging once you have safely arrived and checked into your accommodation. Your tour guide will then arrange to meet you at your hotel/lodge to begin the tour activities as per your itinerary.
Important Reminders:
Confirmation Details: Always have your tour confirmation, including contact numbers for your tour operator and guide, readily available.
Communication: We encourage you to communicate any delays or changes to your travel plans as soon as possible.
Local Assistance: Siwa is a friendly and welcoming place. If you need any immediate assistance upon arrival (e.g., finding a tuk-tuk), don't hesitate to ask locals for directions. Most people are happy to help.
Things to note
Enjoy your journey:
1. Best Time to Visit:
Cooler Months (October to April): This is generally the most advisable time to visit Siwa. Temperatures are pleasant during the day (15-25°C / 59-77°F) and can get cool at night, perfect for desert activities and comfortable exploration.
Summer Months (May to September): While possible to visit, temperatures can be very hot (often exceeding 40°C / 104°F). Desert activities are usually scheduled for late afternoon or early morning to avoid the peak heat. If visiting in summer, hydrate frequently!
2. Cultural Sensitivity & Dress Code:
Modesty is Key: Siwa is a conservative Berber community with strong traditional values.
For Women: It is highly recommended to dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders, upper arms, and knees, especially when in public areas, visiting religious sites (like Shali Fortress ruins), or walking around the town. Loose-fitting clothing is also more comfortable in the desert climate. While some public springs may see tourists in swimsuits, covering up with a t-shirt or sarong is appreciated to respect local customs.
For Men: Long trousers and shirts with sleeves are generally appropriate.
Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of local people, especially women and children. Respect their wishes if they decline. Avoid photographing military or strategic sites.
Alcohol: Alcohol is generally not widely available in Siwa due to religious and cultural preferences. Please respect this local custom.
3. Health & Comfort:
Hydration: The desert climate can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of bottled water throughout the day, especially during desert excursions.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen (high SPF), sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat or scarf are essential to protect yourself from the strong desert sun. A scarf can also protect against sand and wind during desert safaris.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must for exploring ancient sites, walking around town, and navigating uneven terrain. For desert activities, closed-toe shoes are preferable to keep sand out.
Swimming: Bring your swimsuit! You'll have opportunities to swim in the refreshing freshwater springs and float in the unique salt lakes. Remember to bring fresh water for rinsing off after the salt lakes, as facilities may be limited at some locations.
Insect Repellent: While desert areas may have fewer mosquitoes, they can be present in green areas of the oasis, especially around water sources.
Medication: Bring any personal medications you may need, as pharmacies in Siwa might have limited stock compared to larger cities.
4. Money & Transactions:
Cash is King: Siwa is largely a cash-based society. While some hotels may accept cards, it's essential to carry enough Egyptian Pounds (EGP) for smaller purchases, local crafts, tips (baksheesh), and personal expenses. ATMs may be limited or occasionally out of service.
Small Denominations: Having smaller bills is very useful for shopping in the souq, buying snacks, and for tipping.
Bargaining: Bargaining is common and expected in local markets (souqs). Enjoy the playful interaction!
5. Communication:
Local Language: While most people involved in tourism speak some English, the local language in Siwa is Siwi (a Berber dialect), and Arabic. Learning a few basic Arabic phrases (e.g., "Shukran" - Thank you, "Salam Alaykum" - Hello) can enhance your interactions.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi might be available at your accommodation, but mobile data coverage can be intermittent in some areas, especially in the deeper desert.
6. Desert Safari Specifics:
Adventure Mindset: Desert safaris can be bumpy and exhilarating. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking medication beforehand.
Respect the Environment: Please follow your guide's instructions to help preserve the fragile desert ecosystem. Do not litter.
7. Flexibility & Patience:
Siwa operates at a slower pace than major cities. Embrace the tranquility and be prepared for a more relaxed schedule. Flexibility and patience will enhance your experience.
