Basel - The Swiss-German-French Tripoint
Did you know that Basel has the most museums in Switzerland? The city, situated at the Swiss-German-French tripoint is home to 40 museums and hosts the country’s oldest university, dating all the way from 1460. Here lies the world’s first international railway station (according to Baslers, at least), the Basel Bahnhof SBB, so it’s only natural that the city has been serving as a hub since the Renaissance. With Germany’s Black Forest and France’s Vosges Mountains just a step away, this territory of only 175.000 people has a healthy tourism, also due to it being one of the centers of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
Among its 40 museums, the Basel Art Museum – devoted to the iron sculptor Jean Tinguely who also made Basel’s famous attraction, the Fasnachtsbrunnen or Tinguely fountain in a pool where the stage of the old city theater was once located - , the Museum of Cultures and the Beyeler Foundation are internationally known, as are many other galleries and playhouses. Visitors are amazed by the Elisabethenkirche neo gothic church in the centre which offers a breathtaking view of the city - its 72 meter high tower is imposing, but let’s not forget about the Roche Tower either, the highest building in Switzerland, which is also located in Basel.
