Barcelona Montjuic Tour
Overview of the tour in Barcelona
Two main legends tell the origin of Barcelona:
The legend of Roman origin attributes the foundation to Hercules, joins the Argonauts led by Jason in search of the golden fleece, crossing the Mediterranean in nine ships. A storm disperses the fleet near the coast of Catalonia, but all ships can regroup, except one. Jason then orders Hercules to look for the ninth ship. He found the wreck of Barça Nona on a gentle hill (Montjuïc). They founded a city with the name of Barca Nona, Barcanona.
The legend of Carthaginian origin grants Amílcar Barca, father of Aníbal, the foundation of the city, until 230 BC. C. under the name of Barceno, Barcelino or Nova Barci Nova in relation to the line of his Barca family. This etymology is also frequently mentioned in relation to Aníbal Barca.
But the etymological origin is well-founded on the toponym of Laietano and Iberian, and is defended by renowned linguists and etymologists such as Joan Coromines.
