The Byzantine Churches of Plaka Walking Tour

Overview of the tour in Athens
We walk in Plaka, the oldest and most famous neighbourhood in Athens visiting seven beautiful Byzantine churches of the 11th and 12th centuries.
We admire their elegance and learn about their stories. Furthermore, we will get to know the most important characteristics of Byzantine architecture and the role that these churches played in our local history.
The Byzantine style flourished in the Byzantine Empire that dates from the 5th until the 15th century. In Athens, the Byzantine style adapted to the city’s conditions of those days using most of the time ancient Greek parts as building materials. During the Greek Revolution, most of them were damaged and each one of them followed its unique destiny.
