Often overlooked by safari-goers, Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, offering the opportunity to explore a captivating diversity of habitats within just a few hours. The park is the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen.
Rolling grassy hills encircle the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each displaying a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows are sometimes tinged pink with thousands of flamingos. Waterbucks are common along the lakes’ watery fringes, while on the grassy hills, giraffes glide past grazing herds of zebras, buffalo, and warthogs. Elephant sightings are rare, and lions are absent altogether, making leopards and spotted hyenas the primary predators.
The park's forest is teeming with birdlife, with many forest species more easily spotted here than elsewhere along the tourist route. The Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon are among the possible highlights.
