Overview
Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, often called a smaller, more easygoing version of Amsterdam. But it’s so much more than that! Utrecht is a vibrant university city filled with quaint shops, old brown bars, hidden oases, and plenty of canals and gabled houses.
During this tour, I will show you around town. Being a historian in a city like Utrecht is a bit like being Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. There are endless stories to uncover! But we’ll talk about more than just history. How do we manage to avoid accidents with all those bicycles? How is Utrecht creating a modern, sustainable living environment? Any questions? I love them! Ask me anything (well, almost anything).
The tour includes must-see highlights like the Cathedral and the canals, but we’ll also visit hidden gems so quiet and peaceful that you’ll forget you’re in the Netherlands' fourth-largest city. You can’t discover all of Utrecht in one walk, but by the end of this tour, you’ll have a great feel for what makes the city so special.
Let me show you my town!
We start and end at Cathedral Square (Domplein), next to the statue of Jan van Nassau.

- Dom Tower
On arrival
From Utrecht Central Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Domplein.
Domplein means Cathedral square in Dutch, and it’s right next to our famous tower.
The tower can be seen all over town and is used as a beacon.
On Domplein, there are two statues: the Statue of Liberty and the statue dedicated to Jan van Nassau (It’s close to the university). That’s where the meeting point is.
