Overview
Tskhaltubo was once the crown jewel of the so-called "Soviet Riviera." Construction of its 22 grand sanatoriums began in the 1920s, and by the 1980s, the resort was so popular that direct trains arrived daily from Moscow. Designated as state property in 1920, it evolved into a world-class center for balneotherapy a medical treatment using mineral-enriched waters to heal the body.
The resort's prestige was so high that it even caught the attention of Joseph Stalin, who had his own private bathhouse and cottage here. Today, you can still visit these historic spots and see where the Soviet leader took his famous treatments.
What makes Tskhaltubo truly unique is its "Water of Immortality." The mineral springs flow naturally at a perfect temperature of 33-35°C, requiring no additional heating or cooling. While many of the magnificent sanatoriums now stand in haunting decay, earning the nickname "Chernobyl without the radiation," the contrast between the ruined grandeur and the still-functioning bathhouses is breathtaking.
Join us to explore these abandoned masterpieces of Soviet architecture and witness the living history of a place where time stands still.
