Overview

Join the Original Free Walking Tour of Tromsø, the city’s first and most established guided walking tour. With excellent reviews and official approval from Visit Tromsø, this tour offers an authentic and in-depth introduction to life at 69° north latitude.

What we’ll explore together:

• Gateway to the Arctic: Discover Tromsø’s pivotal role in polar exploration, the fishing industry, and its transformation into a modern Arctic hub.

• Cultural Identity: Learn about the indigenous Sami culture, the impact of World War II on the region, and how locals adapt to the extreme changes between the Northern Lights and the midnight sun.

• Nature and Science: We provide the scientific and cultural context behind the Northern Lights and the polar night, explaining how they shape daily life.

• Academic Focus: Led by a highly experienced local guide, this tour avoids the trivialities often found in “influencer”-style tours. We focus on meaningful history, sociology, and the reality of life in the far north.

Please dress appropriately for arctic weather. We strongly recommend that you wear warm layered clothing, a hat and gloves, as well as comfortable walking shoes suitable for snow or icy roads, especially in winter.

Bring a camera or phone. You may also find a small backpack and water bottle useful.
