Explore the highlights of this charming town! We’ll start at its oldest church, preserving remnants of the Roman city of Sellium. Next, we’ll learn about the town’s patron saint, St. Iria, and cross the Nabão River, earning the locals the nickname "Nabantinos."
Strolling through the historic center, we’ll visit Café Paraíso, one of Portugal’s oldest coffeehouses. On the main square, discover the statue of D. Gualdim Pais, Grand Master of the Templar Knights and founder of the castle, whose construction began on March 1, 1160. From here, admire the city hall, formerly King Manuel I’s palace, and the main church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
Tomar is also home to Portugal’s oldest synagogue, built in the early 15th century. While it no longer serves a Jewish community, it now operates as a fascinating museum.
