In the 19th century, after conflicts with foreign powers, the city was opened to international trade and several areas came under the control of European countries and Japan.
Each built their own buildings, banks, churches and streets, following their own architectural style.
That is why, as we walk around today, you will notice a very interesting mix: European style buildings next to traditional Chinese elements.
This is not a coincidence, but a direct result of that history.
In some areas we will see very elegant architecture, with gardens and old houses that belonged to rich families or foreigners. They were quiet residential neighborhoods, very different from the rest of the city.
We will also pass through more commercial areas, where for a long time local people have lived, bought and sold typical products. There you can see a more traditional part of Chinese culture, with food, handicrafts and local customs.
Finally, we will see how the modern city has grown around all this, combining the old with the new, and creating a unique identity.
