Tangier Insider Walking Free Tour
Overview
We’ll start at the kasbah gates and wind through narrow lanes that open unexpectedly into sun-drenched squares. Along the way, I’ll introduce you to a spice merchant whose family has traded from the same stall for generations, show you the hammam tucked behind an unmarked door that locals still use every week, and stop at a rooftop with a view of the strait that few tourists ever find.
We’ll trace the rhythm of medina life — the morning bread run, the carpet weavers working in near silence, the old men playing cards in a courtyard that hasn’t changed in decades. I’ll share the history of Tangier’s unique past as an international zone, its role as a crossroads of cultures, and the stories written into its walls.
This is not a highlight reel. It’s a slow, curious walk through a living city with someone who knows its every corner, mood, and secret. Come ready to wander, ask questions, and see Tangier the way its people do.
On arrival
Head to the iconic Cinema Rif on the Grand Socco square — the large art deco building with the distinctive facade, right at the entrance to the medina. I’ll be waiting outside the main entrance. Look for me holding a sign with your name.
Things to note
• Wear comfortable walking shoes — the medina streets are cobbled and hilly.
• The tour involves moderate walking for about 2 hours.
• Dress modestly out of respect for the local community.
• Bring a small amount of cash if you’d like to purchase anything from artisan shops.
• The medina is best explored at a relaxed pace — we never rush.
