On arrival
Upon arrival in Elahera, please head to the Elahera Gem Mines main entrance, located along the Elahera–Dambulla Road. You will see local guides and signs marking the mining site.
If you are traveling by car or taxi:
From Dambulla (approx. 25 km, ~45 min), take the A6 road toward Elahera. The gem mines are well-signposted on the left-hand side.
From Habarana (approx. 15 km, ~25 min), follow the main road to Elahera town; the mines are located just outside the town center.
Things to note
Duration: The full experience lasts approximately 4–6 hours, including gem mining and visits to the dams.
Physical Activity: Light walking and some bending required for gem washing; comfortable shoes recommended.
Weather: The tour is outdoors; bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. Tour may be rescheduled in heavy rain.
Clothing: Casual, comfortable clothes that can get a little muddy during gem washing.
Children: Suitable for all ages; children should be supervised during gem mining.
Photography: Cameras and smartphones are welcome; please respect local miners and surroundings.
Accessibility: The gem mining site may have uneven terrain; not fully wheelchair accessible.
Local Interaction: Visitors will meet local miners and guides; please respect local customs and instructions.
