Sarajevo Jewish Tour
Overview of the tour in Sarajevo
Join us for a fascinating tour to explore the rich history and culture of the Jewish community in Sarajevo. Discover how the Jews in the Ottoman Empire were treated with respect and enjoyed significant autonomy. Learn about the rights they had, including the freedom to buy property, build synagogues, and trade throughout the empire. By 1856, Jews were granted full equality under Ottoman law.
One of the highlights of the tour is the 700-year-old Haggadah, an important Jewish text that survived three wars and was saved from the Nazis by a Muslim librarian. You'll hear the incredible story of how this ancient book came to be preserved and why it's still considered one of the most valuable items in the National Museum.
Next, we'll visit The Old Jewish Temple, which now houses The Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This museum offers insight into the five centuries of Jewish history in Sarajevo. You'll also have the opportunity to see the big Ashkenazi Synagogue, the only synagogue in Sarajevo that still holds sermons today.
