Overview
Upon arrival in Kraljeva Sutjeska, you get the feeling that you have sailed through time and returned to the past. Kraljeva Sutjeska and the fortress of Bobovac were the seats of two Bosnian kings from the Kotromanić dynasty, Tomaš and Tvrtko. The historical importance of this fortress lies in the fact that it once safeguarded the Bosnian royal crown and housed the royal grave chapel. It is believed that King Stjepan Ostoja ordered the old bishop’s church to be rearranged for this purpose. Three Bosnian kings were buried there: Stjepan Ostoja, Tvrtko II Kotromanić, and Stjepan Tomaš Kotromanić.
The only fully preserved structure in Bobovac is the mausoleum that Queen Katarina built in honor of King Tvrtko after his death. In memory of the last Bosnian Queen, St. Catherine, women, as a sign of mourning, cover their heads with black scarves in their traditional costumes.
After about a 2-hour drive, you will reach Kraljeva Sutjeska, and from there, get closer to the medieval town of Bobovac.
