Secrets of the Colonial Zone: Hidden History Tour
Overview
We’ll begin at Puerta de la Misericordia, the symbolic gateway of freedom, and from there explore plazas, cobblestone streets, and hidden corners filled with history. Along the way, I’ll share stories not only from Dominican history, but also from my own family, who have lived in the Colonial Zone and Ciudad Nueva for generations.
Expect a mix of famous landmarks and secret hideouts: the kind of places most visitors walk past without noticing. I’ll bring the history to life with anecdotes, legends, and even a touch of music to make our walk fun and memorable.
This tour is perfect for anyone who wants to go beyond the surface and truly understand the soul of the Colonial Zone.

Our Guides
On arrival
We will meet at Puerta de la Misericordia (The Gate of Mercy), located on Calle Palo Hincado, at the edge of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
How to find it:
Look for the large stone city gate with arches; it’s a historic monument built in 1543.
If you arrive by taxi or car, ask the driver to drop you at Puerta de la Misericordia, Zona Colonial.
It is near the Parque Independencia and only a short walk from Calle El Conde, the main pedestrian street.
Things to note
Comfortable shoes are recommended, as we will be walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially if joining the tour during the day; Santo Domingo can get very hot.
Don’t forget your camera or phone; there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early at the meeting point (Puerta de la Misericordia) so we can start on time.
Entrance to monuments (such as the Cathedral or Fortaleza Ozama) is not included, but you may visit them after the tour if you wish.
