Taironaka Ancestral Tour
Overview
The tour continues to La Cansamaria, the Kogui house built according to the ancestral wisdom of the Mamos (Kogui spiritual leaders), where you’ll enjoy a short talk to gain firsthand insight into the culture, worldview, and customs of this indigenous people.
Afterward, you’ll visit the Tairona Museum, home to more than 300 archaeological artifacts found at the site, which tell the story of the Tairona civilization, the Spanish conquest, and how this culture has navigated the modern era up to the present day.
The tour ends back at the restaurant, the starting and ending point of the experience.

On arrival
Meeting point at the Taironaka restaurant, located at Km 56.6 on the Santa Marta–Riohacha highway (Caribbean Trunk Highway), in the Don Diego area. If you’re traveling by public transportation, take a bus or shared taxi from Santa Marta heading toward Palomino/Riohacha and ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance to the Don Diego River (the trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours).
From the main highway, there are two ways to get to Taironaka:
On foot (free): Follow the marked trail along the river; it’s about a 25-minute walk.
By boat (extra cost): A short canoe ride is available for 35,000 COP for those who prefer not to walk.
Things to note
The tour is led in Spanish by a member of the Kogui indigenous community.
Duration: approximately 1 hour.
Comfortable clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are recommended, as the tour includes stone terraces and natural terrain.
Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and water; the climate is tropical and humid.
This is a cultural and archaeological experience in a territory considered sacred by the Kogui people—please be respectful during your visit to Cansamaria and while listening to the guide.
