Overview
Meeting point: Castro Alves Square, opposite the Cine Metha Glauber Rocha Barraquinha, at 9.30 am and 3.00 pm!
A place of resistance and celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture, home to the Barraquinha Cultural Centre, where Brazil’s first Candomblé terreiro was founded.
Castro Alves, a tribute to the “poet of the slaves”.
The stage for Salvador’s carnivals, with the parade of Afro-Brazilian blocos, where these groups span generations, resisting prejudice.
Brazil’s first street, a blend of colonial styles, the scene of a bombardment in 1912.
We arrive at Praça Municipal, where we highlight the Town Hall and jail, where several leaders of the city’s major uprisings were imprisoned.
Rua da Misericórdia, where the city’s first hospital was founded; at its door stood the gathering place for the outcasts and the marginalised.
Memorial das Baianas, telling the story of resistance to oppression and the determination of these women.
Monument to Zumbi dos Palmares: a tribute to the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares.
The crossroads of São Francisco and the Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos, Casa do Olodum, and finally Largo do Pelourinho.
