Invicta: The City That Refused to Surrender - Porto History Tour
Overview
You will hear how the citizens of 1415 gave their meat to the fleet and kept the tripe, earning a nickname they still carry with pride. How the French broke through the medieval walls in 1809 and drove thousands onto a collapsing bridge of boats — and where the memorial to the drowned still stands. How the city survived nine months of siege in 1832–33, eating cats and sawdust bread rather than open its gates, and why that year is carved into its coat of arms. And how, in 1891, Porto rose for the republic twenty years before Lisbon dared.
The route runs from Aliados through Clérigos, Rua das Flores, the Cathedral and the old walls, down to Ribeira, ending at Praça do Infante. Around 2.5 km at an easy pace.
This is not a list of buildings with dates. It is one story, told in order, in the places where it happened.
This activity includes:
- Praça da Liberdade
- Ribeira do Porto
- Bolsa Palace
- Clérigos Tower
- rua das flores
- Muralha Fernandina
- Avenida dos Aliados
Our Guides
On arrival
Meet at the base of the equestrian statue of D. Pedro IV, in the centre of Praça da Liberdade, facing the Câmara Municipal (city hall) at the top of Avenida dos Aliados. The nearest metro station is Aliados (lines D), a one-minute walk. Look for the guide holding umbrella/sign — I will be there 10 minutes before the start time. Please arrive 5 minutes early; the tour leaves on time.
Things to note
The route covers about 2.5 km on cobblestones with some downhill sections toward the river — comfortable shoes recommended.
The tour runs rain or shine; Porto rain is part of the story.
Duration is around 2h15.
This is a free walking tour: there is no fixed price, and at the end you decide what the experience was worth.
The tour ends at Praça do Infante, near the river — a good starting point for lunch, the port cellars, or my Gaia history tour, which starts nearby.
