Overview
Montpellier is a city like no other: born at the crossroads of the Frankish, Occitan and Mediterranean worlds, it has long looked to the Iberian peninsula as much as to the kingdom of France.
This free tour takes you through over a thousand years of history, from the birth of the Guilhem seigneury in the Middle Ages to the city's definitive entry into the kingdom of France in the 14th century. You'll discover how Montpellier became a city of merchants, knowledge and power, coveted by the kings of Aragon, integrated into the kingdom of Majorca, then purchased by the French crown.
We'll wander through medieval alleyways, squares and emblematic monuments to understand the city's evolution: from vanished fairs and ramparts to royal symbols and grand classical perspectives.
The tour ends on the Promenade du Peyrou and its Arceaux, an 18th-century masterpiece of engineering, where political history, architecture and the mastery of water meet, facing one of the finest panoramas in the region.
