Our Guides
On arrival
To ensure a smooth start to your exploration of Mozambique's vibrant capital, please meet your guide at the Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
Meeting Point: The Cathedral Steps.
The Cathedral is located at the top of Avenida Samora Machel, right on the Praça da Independência. It is the white, towering Art Deco building that dominates the city's skyline.
By Taxi/Yango: Ask for "Catedral de Maputo" or "Praça da Independência." Every driver knows this location as it is the administrative heart of the city.
On Foot: If you are coming from the Baixa (Downtown), walk up the hill on Avenida Samora Machel. From the Polana district, it is a short taxi ride or a 20-minute walk.
By Car: Parking is available along the sides of the Praça da Independência, though it is often busy. Look for the "parquímetros" (parking attendants) in yellow or blue vests.
How to identify your guide, once you arrive at the front of the Cathedral:
- Your guide will be waiting at the bottom of the main white stairs leading up to the Cathedral entrance.
- Visual Cue: Look for a guide holding a bright yellow umbrella or wearing a branded lanyard/badge.
Check-in: Please arrive 15 minutes early. This allows time to meet the group, verify your booking, and take a few photos of the statue of Samora Machel across the street before we begin.
Things to note
1. What to Bring & Wear
- Comfortable Footwear: We will be walking on varied surfaces, including traditional Portuguese pavement (calçada) and uneven sidewalks. Sneakers or walking shoes are highly recommended.
- Sun Protection: Maputo’s sun can be intense. Please bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Cash (Meticais): It is helpful to carry small amounts of local currency for snacks at the Central Market or small tips for street performers.
2. Photography Etiquette
- Public Buildings: While Maputo is very photogenic, please note that it is strictly prohibited to photograph government buildings, military sites, or the Presidential Palace. Your guide will advise you on where it is safe to snap photos.
- Local Residents: We kindly ask that you request permission before taking portraits of market vendors or locals. A polite "License?" (Licença) goes a long way.
3. Weather Conditions
- Tours typically proceed in light rain. In the event of extreme tropical storms or temperatures exceeding 35°C, we will contact you to reschedule for a cooler time of day.
4. Safety & Belongings
- Personal Safety: Maputo is generally welcoming, but like any capital city, keep your belongings (bags and cameras) in front of you in crowded areas like the markets.
- Valuables: We suggest leaving original passports and large sums of cash in your hotel safe; a digital copy or photocopy of your ID is sufficient
