Overview
The LGBT+ Manchester Walking Tour is Manchester’s guided queer history and culture tour, led by queer historian Joshua Val Martin and operated by Free Manchester Walking Tours. Public tours run once a month on a changing date and time.
“How did Manchester get so bloody queer?”
Explore the world-famous Gay Village and Canal Street through monuments, memorials, street art and legendary pubs. Hear about underground Victorian drag balls, “secret” gay languages, 19th-century trans lives, HIV activism, all-night parties and political campaigns. Expect well-researched history mixed with gossip, politics and camp.
Josh is a native Mancunian with an MA in History specialising in Manchester’s LGBT+ history and works with LGBTQ+ oral histories. At the end, he shares tailored recommendations for queer bars, clubs, cafés and things to do.
Meeting point: Monument to Vimto, Granby Row, M1 3BU
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
