Things to note
The original free tour of Manchester is perfect for curious locals, and also visitors who want to see the city with a local - because all our guides are native Mancunians.
We discover Manchester as both the first industrialized city at the cutting edge of Victorian politics and innovation, and as a swaggering city of poets, ravers and music makers.
This is an entertaining way to orientate yourself, meet new people, learn local insights and insider tips - see Manchester with a Mancunian and uncover Manchester in the way people have for hundreds of years - on foot, and for free.
Free Manchester Walking Tours is the most comprehensive and entertaining introduction to the city of Manchester (#1 Tour in Manchester, TripAdvisor). They are also a great way to meet new people. These tours aim to tell the story of Manchester.
These tours are run on a tips-only basis. Free Manchester Walking Tours is an independent tour established by Josh, last September. We believe everyone should be able to discover Manchester, no matter what their budget. We receive no financial subsidy or support. I invite visitors to tip at the end of the tour, should they wish to show their appreciation!

Manchester is renowned for rain! And our tours run in ALL weather: an umbrella, a waterproof coat and perhaps shoes with a little grip recommended.
There is no need to book.
I'd be grateful if large parties (10+) could contact me in advance.
School groups must contact me in advance.
PLACES WE GO TO AND THINGS WE TALK ABOUT:
In our tours, we talk about two different periods of Manchester's history: the industrial era, and the post-industrial 'Mad-chester' era. We take in the big attractions (Town Hall, Royal Exchange, and Free Trade Hall) as well as the lesser-known quirks (Vimto Monument, Underground Manchester, and Factory Records).
ABOUT THE GUIDE:
Hello! My name's Josh. I'm from Manchester, went to the University of Manchester and I founded Free Manchester Walking Tours three years ago. I love this city, and take pride in sharing its unique story with visitors and Mancunians alike. As well as a tour guide, I'm a playwright, having recently been awarded a commendation by the Bruntwood Prize for playwriting. I've invited a fantastic team of like-minded storytellers to join the team, all of whom are also passionate about this city and what it has to offer.
