Overview
Before World War 2, Jews made up around 30% of the city's population and it was one of the biggest Jewish communities in Europe. The city was immortalised in countless stories, novels and poems by its Jewish inhabitants, the most famous of which would be Sholem Aleikhem and Stanisław Lem.
The thriving community that existed since the Middle Ages disappeared, like in most places in Europe, almost overnight, destroyed by the Holocaust. Today, out of over a hundred synagogues and prayer houses only a handful remain. Yet, the stories stay. Ones of hope, friendship and heartbreak. Let us tell them to you.
Let us walk you through the stories of Jewish life and death, complex realities of the multicultural city through the ages - how the Jews, Poles and Ukrainians interacted and how World War 2, including German and Soviet occupations, changed it forever.
