Overview

After the 1755 earthquake reshaped the city below, these hills developed their own identity. Chiado became a center of literature and ideas, while Bairro Alto grew into a vibrant, ever-changing district — calm by day, full of energy by night.

Starting near Restauradores and Rossio, we gradually climb into Chiado, passing iconic landmarks like the Santa Justa Lift and the Carmo Convent.

From there, we continue into Bairro Alto, discovering hidden streets, historic sites, and ending with panoramic views over Lisbon.

Highlights:
Restauradores Square — gateway between old and new Lisbon
Rossio Square — lively historic heart of the city
Santa Justa Lift — iconic iron elevator with panoramic views
Carmo Convent — striking ruins from the 1755 earthquake
Bertrand Bookstore — the world’s oldest operating bookstore
A Brasileira — historic café linked to poet Fernando Pessoa
Camões Square — central meeting point of Chiado
Bica Funicular — Lisbon’s famous yellow tram
Bairro Alto — bohemian district with a vibrant atmosphere
São Roque Church — richly decorated interior hidden behind a simple façade
