Overview

We will meet at the gate of Yunnan University and begin our walk through Kunming’s most historic campus. Here, we will visit Huize Hall, a nationally protected cultural heritage site. We will also see traces of the old imperial examination system 300 years ago.

Then Wenhua Alley, once home to some of China’s most distinguished scholars during WW II, now a lively street that reflects both the local and international sides of Kunming. You will see small local shops selling honey-roasted chestnuts and chrysanthemum rice noodles, as well as Salvador’s Coffee House, a well-known café connected to the international student and traveler culture.

Our next stop is the Yunnan Military Academy, another nationally protected cultural heritage site. We can visit the museum inside if you like, or simply enjoy its beautiful French classical-style architecture from outside.

Then we will arrive at Green Lake, where locals play mahjong, sing, play instruments, dance, and write calligraphy with water on the ground. The final stop will be Yuantong Temple, one of Kunming’s oldest and most beloved Buddhist temples, known for its unique layout and long history as a spiritual landmark of the city.

The main gate of Yunnan University

On arrival

The location marked on Google Maps is Cuiyunlou, a restaurant that has been open for nearly half a century. It is just northeast of the main gate of Yunnan University.

I will be waiting for you in front of Cuiyunlou, holding a bright yellow umbrella. Please note that I am a woman in my 40s with short hair.

Things to note

Here are a few friendly reminders before we get started.
1. Kunming’s weather is usually sunny and dry, with very strong UV rays, so sun protection is important. Please bring enough drinking water. However, the temperature difference between day and night can be quite large. It can become cold quickly in the early morning, in the evening, or whenever it rains, so please bring a jacket.
2. There are many representative local snacks along the route. If you enjoy tasting local food while traveling, please come with an empty stomach. Food expenses are at your own cost.
3. Entry to Yunnan University requires registration, so please bring your passport. The entrance ticket for Yuantong Temple is 6 RMB, about 0.9 USD, and is at your own cost.

Cancellation policy

You are free to cancel a booking anytime. We kindly remind you to cancel bookings you cannot arrive for. Being reported as absent decreases your customer level points and the benefits you can enjoy.
