Overview

In the 15th century, two decisive events took place in Balat-Fener: the Ottoman conquest of the city and the subsequent resettlement of its Christian inhabitants outside the city walls, and, a few years later, the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula. These two events, so far apart in time, laid the foundation for what is now Istanbul’s most bohemian and vibrant neighborhood.

We’ll wander its steeply sloping streets, marvel at the colors that have become its hallmark, and learn a little more about the history of other religions and peoples who were able to live together in harmony for centuries—and who left their lasting legacy in these streets.

Notes: Reservations for 6 or more people—whether in a single booking or multiple bookings—require payment of €10 per participant.

Recommendations: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for entering Christian places of worship.
