Overview

We’ll begin our walk through the history of Hamburg’s Speicherstadt at the birthplace and cradle of the Port of Hamburg. We’ll take a critical look at the history of our port’s founding and uncover a few contradictions along the way. We’ll then continue our tour toward the Elbphilharmonie and marvel at the rich history of the site where this building stands today. Here, we’ll explore how the port embraced industrialization in the 19th century and how the movement of goods was revolutionized in the 20th century. We’ll delve into the Speicherstadt, exploring its red-brick canyons and the history of its workers and employers, and discover what Westphalia has to do with Hamburg and why workers there lived in a castle. We’ll learn what barge captains, inland waterway skippers, winch operators, and coffee sorters actually did—and why Hamburg is home to coffee barons and Persians. To top it off, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Speicherstadt while sipping coffee.

On arrival

- We meet in front of the Körber Foundation building Kehrwieder 12 opposite the harbour police station No.2, a few minutes' walk from the Baumwall subway station (Elbphilharmonie). You will recognize our tour guides by the orange umbrella at the meeting point.

Things to note

- Please don't forget your umbrellas, rain jackets and sunscreen (we never know what the weather in Hamburg has in store for us).
- The tour takes place regardless of the weather.
- If not enough guests have registered (at least 4 people), we will cancel the tour 24 hours in advance.
