Overview

We begin our tour through the history of Hamburg's Speicherstadt warehouse district at the birthplace and nursery of the Port of Hamburg, taking a critical look at the founding history of our port and uncovering one or two of its many missteps. We will then continue our tour towards the Elbphilharmonie and admire the great history of the place where the building stands today. We will find out how the port was dedicated to industrialization in the 19th century. And how the movement of goods revolutionized in the 20th century. We will immerse ourselves in the Speicherstadt, the red-brick canyons and the history of its workers and employers, we will see what Westphalia has to do with Hamburg and why workers lived there in a castle. We'll find out what bargemen, inland waterway skippers, winch keepers and coffee waitresses actually did and why there are coffee barons and Persians in Hamburg. To round off the tour, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Speicherstadt over a cup of coffee.

On arrival

- We meet in front of the Körber Foundation building Kehrwieder 12 opposite the harbour police station No.2, a few minutes' walk from the Baumwall subway station (Elbphilharmonie). You will recognize our tour guides by the orange umbrella at the meeting point.

Things to note

- Please don't forget your umbrellas, rain jackets and sunscreen (we never know what the weather in Hamburg has in store for us).
- The tour takes place regardless of the weather.
- If not enough guests have registered (at least 4 people), we will cancel the tour 24 hours in advance.
