Overview
For 1,500 years, people have come to these temples looking for comfort, meaning, a sense that we're not alone. I want to walk you through that.
I'm Guangzhou-born, and now a PhD candidate in Philosophy in the UK — this city never stopped being home; being away just made me notice it more.
We'll walk through five of the city's oldest temples — Sanyuan, Guangxiao, Six Banyan, Dafo, and the City God Temple on Beijing Road. I'll share not just the history, but what it means: how Buddhism and Daoism merged into something distinctly Chinese; how a slender Indian bodhisattva became the round-bellied "Laughing Buddha" everyone here grew up with; the Lingnan folk art and carvings most people walk right past.
We finish on Beijing Road. During the trip, I'll point you toward my favorite spots for local food and a bit of shopping — the places I'd send a friend, not the tourist traps.
No script, no rushing, no crowd of forty. Just an honest walk through my city, with room for your questions.
Hope you enjoy the anthropological trip!
