Overview
As the sun begins to set and the light becomes iridescent, it is the best time to discover Gallipoli on foot. Start at the Greek Fountain, one of the oldest in Italy, at the foot of the city's tallest building. From there, crossing the 17th-century bridge with the Angevin Castle silhouetted against the water to the left, you enter the island, the ancient heart of Gallipoli, suspended between sky and sea.
The path follows the ramparts, with the waves you can hear crashing just below, and winds through some of the village's most striking churches: the small Church of the Purità, with its wall paintings that seem to appear and disappear with the light, and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, guardian of the mysterious statue of the Evil Thief. Then we plunge into the narrow streets of Via Antonietta De Pace, where time seems to slow down and every corner tells something.
The tour ends in the square that houses the Cathedral of St. Agatha: one of the great expressions of Salento Baroque, built entirely of carparo, the golden stone of Salento. It stands at the highest point on the island, and at sunset, with that light, is worth the trip alone.
