Overview

How did Nazism change life in one of Germany’s most important cities? On this tour, we’ll explore Frankfurt to discover how Hitler’s rise to power, the Second World War and the Holocaust transformed the city and the lives of its inhabitants forever.

We’ll start at the Alte Oper, where we’ll learn about the context of interwar Germany and the rise of the Nazi regime. We’ll continue to Goetheplatz to discover how certain cultural ideas were used as a tool of propaganda. At Börsenplatz, we’ll analyse the role of the economy and big business in the consolidation of the Third Reich.

At the Hauptwache, we’ll discuss the persecution of the Jewish community, the impact of anti-Semitic policies on trade, and education as a tool of indoctrination. Next, at Paulsplatz, we will explore the role of women, and at St Paul’s Church we will examine how Hitler came to power through propaganda and various political strategies.

The tour will end at the old Jewish cemetery, where we will pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and other minorities persecuted by the Nazis.
